God tested Abraham’s faith with the impossible command to sacrifice his son. How could God’s promise of nations come true if the only heir is dead? And yet God turns the test into a parable of the coming messiah, where a sacrifice is made in Isaac’s place. On this Sunday before Christmas, we will stare in wonder as God sends his own son to earth… to one day climb a hill and be sacrificed for our trespasses.
